Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic and disinfectant used against bacteria, viruses and fungi. Many health care providers are unaware of its presence in various products, so it is often a 'hidden' allergen.

Anaphylaxis to chlorhexidine is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. Allergic reactions are being reported with increasing frequency. Considering the widespread use of chlorhexidine, allergic reactions are rare, but due to lack of knowledge of allergenic potential, chlorhexidine may be overlooked as a potential cause. 

Determination of specific IgE in human blood to Chlorhexidine, c8, shows the body's reaction to a given allergen.
