HIV

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, weakening it and making the body vulnerable to various infections and diseases. If untreated, HIV can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is the final stage of infection and is characterized by severe immune dysfunction.

How is HIV transmitted ?

HIV is transmitted through contact with biologic fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of HIV vary depending on the stage of the infection

The initial stage develops within a few months of infection.

In the first weeks after infection, some people may have no symptoms, while others may develop a flu-like condition with signs such as:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Skin rashes
  • Headaches and muscle aches.

The infection gradually weakens the immune system, which can lead to other signs and symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea

AIDS is the last and most severe stage of HIV infection. At this stage, the immune system is so weakened that the body cannot fight infections and certain types of cancer

Diseases which may be caused by HIV

  • Tuberculosis
  • Severe bacterial infections
  • Cryptococcal meningitis
  • Kaposi's sarcoma

Why is it important to be tested?

HIV can stay in the body for a long time without symptoms. However, early detection of infection allows treatment to begin as soon as possible, greatly increasing the chances of successfully managing the virus and staying healthy

Syphilis

Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. This infection can affect almost all organs and systems of the body, making it extremely dangerous without timely treatment.

How is syphilis transmitted ?

Syphilis is transmitted mainly through sexual contact, but it can also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, resulting in congenital syphilis.

Symptoms:

Primary syphilis

The main symptom is the appearance of a hard chancre, a painless ulcer that usually forms at the areas where the bacterium has entered the body (such as on the genitals, anus, or mouth).

Secondary syphilis

  • Characterized by skin rashes. Usually occur on the palms of the hands and soles, but may cover other parts of the body. The rashes often do not itch and may be pale or reddish in color
  • White or grayish lesions may form in warm, moist areas of the body, such as the labia or anus, where the chancre is located

Latent syphilis

After the secondary stage, syphilis may enter a latent phase in which there are no clinical symptoms but the infection persists in the body.

Diseases which may be caused by syphilis

  • Meningitis
  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Loss of vision

Why is it important to be tested ?

Latent syphilis can cause brain damage, cardiovascular damage, and lead to other serious health problems

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The causative agent of gonorrhea is the bacterium gonococcus. This bacterium prefers moist and warm environments such as the mucous membranes of the genitourinary system, throat and rectum.

How is gonorrhea transmitted ?

Gonorrhea is mainly sexually transmitted, infection can occur through vaginal, anal and oral contact. In addition to the sexual route, gonorrhea can be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth

Symptoms:

Symptoms of gonorrhea may appear a few days after infection, but sometimes they may be absent, making the disease even more dangerous.

Men may have:

  • Hot feeling and pain when urinating
  • Pain and swelling in the testicular area

Women may have:

  • Increased discharge
  • Pain or hot feeling when urinating
  • Nagging pain in the abdomen

Diseases which may be caused by gonorrhea

  • In women: the infection can spread to the fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
  • In men: gonorrhea can cause inflammation of the testicular appendage (epididymitis), which can lead to infertility.

Why is it important to be tested ?

Gonorrhea can be asymptomatic or show only minor symptoms, which means that many people may not be aware of the infection. The test can detect gonococci even in the absence of obvious signs of disease.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. This infection affects the mucous membranes of the urogenital organs, and can also affect the eyes, throat and rectum.

How is chlamydia transmitted ?

Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact. It can also be passed from mother to child during childbirth, which can cause eye and lung infections in the newborn.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of chlamydia may appear several weeks after infection, but the disease can often be asymptomatic.

Men may have:

  • Hot feeling and pain when urinating
  • Discharge from the penis
  • Pain and swelling in the testicular area

Women may have:

  • Pain or hot feeling when urinating
  • Vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods or after intercourse
  • Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area

As symptoms may be minimal or absent, many people may not be aware that they are infected, making the disease particularly dangerous.

Diseases which may be caused by chlamydia

  • Chlamydia can contribute to an increased risk of HIV and other STIs
  • Infertility
  • Peritonitis

Why is it important to be tested ?

Due to the latent course of the infection, the disease can become chronic and affect other organs. Patients with chlamydia can develop complications such as conjunctivitis, pneumonia and arthritis.

Mycoplasmosis

Mycoplasmosis is an acute disease caused by bacteria of the genus Mycoplasma. These bacteria differ from others as they do not have a cell wall which makes them more resistant to some antibiotics.

The main causative agents of mycoplasmosis are Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma hominis. These bacteria can cause genital tract and urinary tract infections in men and women.

How is mycoplasmosis transmitted ?

Mycoplasmosis is most commonly transmitted through unprotected sexual contact

Symptoms:

The main 3 forms of the disease are:

  • Respiratory mycoplasmosis
  • Urogenital mycoplasmosis
  • Congenital mycoplasmosis

Respiratory mycoplasmosis

Respiratory mycoplasmosis is caused by pathogens such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This form of the disease affects the respiratory tract and may present itself with the following symptoms:

  • Acute respiratory infections which include cough, sore throat, fever, and general discomfort
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis

Urogenital mycoplasmosis

Urogenital mycoplasmosis is caused by Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma hominis. This form affects the urogenital tract and may present itself with the following symptoms:

  • Urethritis
  • Vaginitis and cervicitis
  • Prostatitis

Diseases which may be caused by mycoplasmosis

  • Increased risk of infection with other STIs and HIV.
  • Infertility in men and women
  • Premature births

Why is it important to be tested ?

Mycoplasmosis can cause a number of health problems including urinary tract infections, inflammation of the appendages in women, infertility and other reproductive health problems

Ureaplasmosis

Ureaplasmosis is a disease of the urogenital organs caused by tiny single-celled organisms of the Ureaplasma genus. These microorganisms belong to the group of mycoplasmas, and their main disease-causing species is Ureaplasma urealyticum

How is ureaplasmosis transmitted ?

Ureaplasmosis is transmitted through sexual contact

Symptoms:

Latent stage: In this stage, the ureaplasmas reside on the mucous membranes of the urogenital system and do not cause noticeable symptoms

Acute stage: Under certain conditions, such as decreased immunity or concomitant infections, ureaplasmas can activate and cause inflammation of the genitourinary organs. Symptoms may include hot feeling when urinating, discharge, and pelvic pain.

Chronic stage: If the acute infection is not treated in time, it can become chronic. This can lead to prolonged inflammation, adhesions, reduced fertility and possible fetal damage in pregnancy. Chronic inflammation can cause complications and disrupt normal organ function.

Diseases which may be caused by ureaplasmosis

Women may have:

  • Cervicitis
  • Endometritis
  • Vaginitis
  • Infertility

Men may have:

  • Urethritis
  • Cystitis
  • Prostatitis

Why is it important to be tested ?

Ureaplasmosis can adversely affect pregnancy and the health of newborns. In pregnant women, this infection can cause premature labor and other complications.

Gardnerellosis

Gardnerellosis is a disease caused by an overgrowth of the bacterium Gardnerella vaginalis in the vagina.

Gardnerella vaginalis is a gram-negative bacterium that is a normal part of the vaginal microflora. However, when the normal microflora is out of balance, it can multiply in excess and lead to disease.

Symptoms:

  • grayish-white discharge
  • itching and hot feeling
  • irritation

Complications can include genital tract infections such as cystitis

Why is it important to be tested ?

Vaginosis caused by Gardnerella vaginalis can increase the risk of developing urinary tract infections and primarily affect reproductive health.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is an infectious disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It can affect both women and men

How is trichomoniasis transmitted?

The main way of transmission of trichomoniasis is sexual contact with an infected partner. The infection can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her child during childbirth.

Symptoms:

Women may have:

  • Yellow-colored discharge
  • Itching and hot feeling
  • Hot feeling or pain when urinating or having intercourse
  • Pain in the lower abdomen

Most infections in men and women are asymptomatic.

Diseases which may be caused by trichomoniasis

  • Increased risk of transmission of HIV and other STIs
  • Salpingitis
  • Epididymitis
  • Infertility

Why is it important to be tested ?

The disease can cause inflammatory conditions such as urethritis, cervicitis and vaginitis.

Candidiasis

Candidiasis (thrush) is an infectious disease caused by fungi of the Candida genus, most commonly the Candida albicans species. Candidiasis can affect various parts of the body, including the mouth, skin, nails, and genital area.

Fungi of the Candida genus are opportunistic microorganisms that are normally present on the skin, mucous membranes, and in the human gastrointestinal tract. However, under certain conditions, such as decreased immunity, dysbacteriosis, or taking antibiotics, Candida can begin to actively multiply, causing disease

Classification of candidiasis:

Invasive candidiasis

Invasive candidiasis is a form of fungal infection in which fungi of the Candida genus enter the bloodstream and spread to internal organs and tissues. This form of candidiasis can develop in patients with a weakened immune system

Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Unstable blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • White plaque on the nails and oral mucous membranes

Urogenital candidiasis

Urogenital candidiasis affects the urogenital system. This category includes vaginal candidiasis in women and candida balanitis in men

Symptoms of urogenital candidiasis in women:

  • White or yellowish-white curdy discharge
  • Itching, hot feeling
  • Pain during urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Symptoms of candida balanitis in men:

  • Itching, hot feeling, redness in the area of the head of the penis
  • Rashes in the area of the head of the penis, often covered with white plaque
  • Pain during urination and sexual intercourse.

Oral candidiasis

Oropharyngeal candidiasis affects the mucous membranes of the mouth, tongue, gums, and sometimes the throat.

Symptoms:

  • Curd-like plaque on the oral mucosa
  • Pain and hot feeling when eating
  • Dry mouth
  • Swelling of mucous membranes
  • Taste perception disorders
  • Fever

Diseases which may be caused by candidiasis

  • pneumonia
  • myocarditis
  • pyelonephritis

Why is it important to be tested?

A candidiasis test can detect the infection and identify the specific Candida species, which is important for effective treatment.

Cytomegalovirus

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a type 5 herpes virus that belongs to the Herpesviridae family. Most people are asymptomatic, but in immunocompromised individuals and newborns, CMV can cause serious complications, such as damage to internal organs and the central nervous system.

How is cytomegalovirus transmitted?

Cytomegalovirus is transmitted from person to person through various biologic fluids including saliva, urine, blood, breast milk, tears, semen and cervical secretions.

The only reservoir and source of infection is humans

Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Weakness
  • Sore throat
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Fatigue

Diseases which may be caused by cytomegalovirus

  • damage to the central nervous system, eyes, lungs and digestive system.

Why is it important to get tested ?

Cytomegalovirus infection can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune system.

Herpes

Herpes types 1 and 2 belong to the viruses of the Herpesviridae family and cause various forms of herpesvirus infection in humans.

How is herpes transmitted ?

Herpes virus type 1 is transmitted:

  • through kissing and close contact
  • through oral contact
  • through shared household items

Herpes virus type 2 is transmitted:

  • through sexual contact
  • from mother to child during childbirth

These viruses are known for their ability to lifelong residence in the body, causing periodic recurrences of the disease

Symptoms:

In most people, herpes occurs asymptomatic or with minimal symptoms. Many people do not realize they are infected, and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others.

Symptoms of herpes may include occasional blisters or sores. A newly acquired infection may be accompanied by fever, body aches, and enlarged lymph nodes.

  • Oral herpes often manifests itself as blisters (cold sores) or open sores in the mouth, on the lips, and around the mouth.
  • Genital herpes is characterized by swelling, blistering rashes, or open sores around the genitals or anus.

These ulcers and vesicles are usually painful. The blisters may open, release fluid, and then crust over.

The primary infection may have the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Sore throat (with oral herpes)
  • Headache
  • Enlarged lymph nodes

Diseases which may be caused by herpes

  • Meningoencephalitis (infection of the brain).
  • Encephalitis
  • Keratitis (eye infection)

Why is it important to be tested?

A primary infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) is particularly dangerous during pregnancy because of the risk of miscarriage and serious damage to the fetus and newborn.
